HEAL (Health Education and Action for Latinas)
Improving Mental Health and Well-being among Latinas in Imperial Beach and San Ysidro, CA
The goal of Project HEAL is to improve the mental health and well-being of Latinas residing in Imperial Beach and San Ysidro, CA by improving their access to mental health care services. PCI is implementing Project HEAL under a grant provided by The California Endowment. The current project runs from September 2005 – October 2007.
The objectives of the project are to increase cultural competency among health care providers; screen for depression among Latina patients; enroll women with mild to severe depression in a seven week ¿Es Difícil Ser Mujer? (EDSM) workshop; provide health presentations at community sites and refer women with unmet needs to social and mental health care services.
Partnerships have been formed with the Reachout to Families Resource Center, San Ysidro Health Center, San Diego Job Corps and other community agencies. The provider education and PRIME-MD PHQ screening strategy is being implemented at the Imperial Beach Health Center (IBHC). The Community Research Foundation (CRF) is the formal referral for medical necessity mental health needs, and CRF will refer non-medical necessity clients to HEAL group support and education sessions.
